The RSS Manchester Student Prize has been instituted by the Manchester Local Group of the Royal Statistical Society in 2007 to promote the use of statistics across all disciplines.   We have the support of a growing number of industrial sponsors, starting with AstraZeneca, Eastman and Shell.

For 2008 we have divided the prizes into two streams, one for those who are studying mathematics and/or statistics and another for all other undergraduates.

Within these two streams, there are three levels of prize

•  Gold (£100)
•  Silver (£70)
•  Bronze (£50)

Eligibility

The Prize is open to ANY final year undergraduate studying ANY subject in ANY Higher Education institution that belongs to the NW Universities Association.  For 2008 we have added Sheffield University because of its historical connection with Manchester statistics, the Isle of Man and Bangor Business Schools because they are roughly in our area. If you consider your institution to be in, or connected to, the North West, please get in touch.

The complete list is currently:

We are indebted to Professor Bob Munn, Vice-President for Teaching and Learning at The University of Manchester for his support:

"An understanding of statistics is important across much of modern life, and is vital underpinning for much research. Nevertheless, such understanding is still too thinly spread - it was recently reported that 50% of the U.K. population does not know what 50% means! Hence we should welcome efforts to foster the study of statistics at all levels.

I am therefore very pleased to commend the Manchester Group of the Royal Statistical Society for its initiative in establishing the RSS Manchester Student Prize. The prizes should help to raise the profile of statistics among students in higher education in this region, and indeed among the academic staff who teach them. I wish the venture every success."
